Prague highlights: eight hidden gems and insider tips

From dreamy alleyways to unforgettable taste experiences – here I share my eight insider tips and hidden gems from my time in Prague. Find out why Prague should definitely be a must-visit on your travel list!

1/8 | Brunch at Café Venue

A cozy, hip café in Prague’s Old Town that offers a super delicious brunch and breakfast menu all day long.

The café is very busy and doesn’t have many seats. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make a reservation in advance – so it’s worth arriving a few minutes before the café opens to secure a seat. Alternatively, if you can spare some time, you can wait for a free seat. A main course costs between €7-10.

Highly recommended: The mac & cheese grilled sandwich! If you’re looking for a good breakfast, this is the place for you.

2/8 | Walking through the narrowest street in Prague

You can find a small curiosity in Lesser Town near the Kafka Museum: the narrowest street in Prague. The narrow alley has its own traffic lights at both ends, as it is no wider than 50 cm in some places.

3/8 | Short rest at the Rudolfinum

From the bridgehead of the Mánes Bridge at Rudolfínsky Park you have a beautiful view of Hradčany and the Vltava River. There are several places to sit and relax here.

4/8 | Hike to Prague Castle (Pražský hrad)

From the Rudolfinum, the walk up to the castle takes about a fifteen minutes. Prague Castle is known as one of the largest castle complexes in the world and combines palaces, church buildings and magnificent gardens into a fascinating ensemble.

Access to the opulent interiors, including the imposing St. Vitus Cathedral, is subject to a fee, but you can explore the impressive and extensive grounds and gardens for free.

Tip: take your ID with you to be on the safe side, as there may be entrance checks.

There are also numerous vantage points along the castle that give you an incomparable view of the red roofs of the city. Here you can lose yourself and enjoy the enchanting view of Prague to the full.

Photo tip: For a picture above the rooftops of the city without elbow jostling, don’t aim for the first available opportunity where the tourists are milling about, but take a stroll along the park. Trust me, there will be some great photo opportunities without the crowds.

5/8 | End the evening with a delicious pizza at the Laboratorio della Pizza restaurant

We discovered this restaurant by chance in a small alleyway away from the hustle and bustle and were immediately in love!

It has a wonderful ambience, especially in summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the flair of Prague. The pizzas here are an absolute highlight. You can either create your own pizza or choose from a variety of ready-made creations. Here you can get authentic Italian pizza with wonderfully crispy dough. However, it is advisable to book in advance as this small restaurant fills up quickly. The price for a pizza is the equivalent of around €10.

6/8 | Rummage in Spalena 53

My favorite antiquarian bookshop in Prague! A quaint, winding bookshop with dark wooden floors that creak with every step. Shelves upon shelves, crammed to the top with books, some new and some second-hand at unbeatable prices (sometimes less than CZK 10), old photographs and postcards – every book lover’s heart beats faster here!

At the back of the store there is a selection of English and even German titles.

Another highlight is the large, well-stocked selection of cult retro records.

Opening hours: Mon-Fri: 8:30-18:30, Sat: 10-16, Sun: Closed

7/8 | Knedlín: Traditional Czech dumplings

This cozy café spans two floors and serves traditional Czech dumplings with a modern twist.

The dumplings are freshly prepared on site, so you can watch the production process live. There are around 20 different varieties on offer – from savory to sweet, from plum filling to Thai-style – there’s something for everyone!

We tried various creations and they were incredibly tasty. So if you want to eat something typical of the country in Prague, you should definitely stop by here. All dumplings can also be ordered to take away!

A dumpling costs between 2-3 €.

Opening hours: Mon-Thu: from 9:00 – 21:00, Fri: 9:00 – 22:00, Sat and Sun: 10:00 – 22:00

8/8 | Homage to Ginger and Fred: Creative poses at the Dancing House

Probably the most romantic office building in the world! This architectural treasure is located just outside Prague’s old town. A dynamic building in the style of deconstructivism was created in 1996 from steel, glass and concrete: the „Dancing House“ (Tančící dům). Conceived by Czech architect Vlado Milunic in collaboration with Canadian star architect and designer Frank O. Gehry.

The building is also known as „Ginger and Fred“. This nickname comes from the building’s towers, which evoke associations with the dancing figures of the iconic dancing couple Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. This legendary dance duo shaped Hollywood in the middle of the 20th century. The stone tower embodies the male dancer, while the glass tower represents his female partner, who is light on her feet.

My photo tip: be inspired by the dynamism of the architecture and dance away! Whether pirouetting or waltzing with your travel companion – there are no limits to your creativity.
